Dear Ukrainian colleagues!
My name is Tuuliki Tõiste and I am the president of the Estonian Librarians’ Association and greeting you on behalf of the Estonian librarians at your annual conference!
We wish you strength and courage in doing your daily work – helping people access information, finding an opportunity to meet community members in the library, offering help in providing even a little entertainment, and keeping libraries as the strongholds of democracy open and accessible.
We in Estonian libraries try to do the same – to exist and to be open to everyone, including residents from Ukraine. Libraries offer war refugees the first point of contact in our society, and we help them integrate into the Estonia society, to find a place to live and work.
In several libraries across Estonia, language cafés are organized specifically for people who have fled Ukraine, so that it would be easier for them to cope in an Estonian-speaking environment.
The libraries have set up workplaces for making camouflage netting, they collect leftover wax from people for trench candles and make candles together. Just next week a volunteer from Ukraine will conduct a motanky protection dolls workshop. Both library staff and readers participate in the activities.
Estonian libraries collect literature in Ukrainian, organize reading classes, movie and meeting evenings especially for children, but also for adults.
Last year, libraries visited war refugees’ accommodation places to introduce library services to people and encourage them to come to the library, because it is the library that provides primary help, even when filing documents, using the Internet, and keeping in touch with families. Libraries offer access to real news information channels, reliable websites, including job portals. In addition, the library is a great place for people in a foreign country to meet members of their community in a calm, neutral and free space.
Libraries around the world have one goal – to be equally open to everyone and to ensure access to reliable information. Estonian libraries offer services to everyone who crosses the doorstep, everyone is welcome.
Estonian librarians wish their Ukrainian colleagues a successful conference and hopefully the war in Ukraine will end soon and we all can meet at international conferences, and we can learn from your experience how you managed to help people of Ukraine through these horrible times.

Eesti Raamatukoguhoidjate Ühing ühineb EBLIDA üleskutsega toetada Ukraina pagulasi
Euroopa Raamatukogu-, Info- ja Dokumentatsiooniühenduste Büroo (EBLIDA), Euroopa Rahvaraamatukogude Riikliku Poliitika Kujundajate Foorum (NAPLE) ja Rahvaraamatukogud 2030 (PL2030) mõistavad ühisavalduses hukka Venemaa Föderatsiooni barbaarse sissetungi Ukrainasse ja kutsuvad raamatukogusid üles toetama Ukraina pagulasi.
Eesti raamatukogud pagulaste heaks
Raamatukogud on üle Eesti toetanud Ukraina pagulasi pakkudes juurdepääsu usaldusväärsele infole, aidates kohaneda, võimaldades olla toetavas avalikus ruumis jm.
- Siinjuures ainult mõned näited, mida seni on tehtud:
- Märtsi esimestel päevadel panid raamatukogud üle Eesti kokku Ukraina-teemalised väljapanekud, et näidata oma toetust ning pakkuda kogukonnale informatsiooni Ukraina ajaloost, kultuurist ning teemakohasest kirjandusest
- Kärdla raamatukogu korraldab Ukraina-Eesti keelekohvikut;
- Viljandi Linnaraamatukogus saab punuda varjevõrke Ukrainasse saatmiseks;
- Rakveres on Ukraina sõjapõgenike kokkusaamiskohaks Lääne-Virumaa Keskraamatukogu.
Kui teil on Ukraina pagulaste toetamiseks head praktikat või häid ideid, mida jagada kolleegidega Eestis ja Euroopas, siis täitke väike infokorjevorm.

Oleme mõttes ukrainlaste ja Ukraina kolleegidega. Et aga võimalikult tõhusalt aidata, koondasime kokku informatsiooni.
Usun, et lähiajal tekib palju kohti, mis reklaamivad end Ukraina abistajatena.
Vältimaks seda, et langetakse petturite ohvriks, koondasime ametlikud kanalid, mille kaudu annetused ja abi jõuavad ka tegelikult abivajajateni.
Meeldetuletuseks lisan veel ka IFLA koostatud ja eesti keelde tõlgitud lihtsa skeemi valeuudiste ära tundmiseks.
Olles ise informeeritud ja pakkudes inimestele tuge infohulgas orienteerumisel, saame toetada kolleege koledates sõjakeeristes.
